“A baby is God’s opinion that life should go on.” Carl Sandburg

Anyone who knows me well will attest to my affection for babies. I’m fond of their sweet coos, tiny fingers and toes and precious expressions while slumbering.

Babies bring a fresh perspective to life. Hope. Innocence. Purity.

The French documentary film, Babies, by Thomas Balmès focuses on these qualities and more by simultaneously following four babies from first breaths to toddling steps. This fascinating program reveals the similarities and disparities of cultures in Namibia, Mongolia, Japan and the US.

Each child’s tale unfolds sans narration. Instead, natural sounds and conversations recount them extemporaneously. This documentary is an ingenuous way to celebrate the story we call life.
